Dwayne L. Bentley is a Registered Patent Attorney, focusing his practice on patent, trademark and copyright prosecution, litigation, licensing, and opinion work and counseling. He also represents clients in litigation in the Civil and Supreme Courts of New York. With acquired knowledge and experience as in-house counsel with a large corporation coupled with working for several law firms and the U.S. Federal Government, he has served both sides of the spectrum where he has gained expertise to effectively serve his clients.
Upon graduating law school, Mr. Bentley became a United States Patent Examiner at the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). At the USPTO, he was employed in the field of semiconductor devices where he developed proficiency for understanding the patent application process. After working at the USPTO, he was employed at the intellectual property law firm of Schwegman, Lundberg & Woessner (formerly Schwegman, Lundberg, Woessner & Kluth P.A.) in Minneapolis, MN, where he represented multinational corporations and midsize technology companies for the electrical, mechanical, and software arts.
He then became in-house counsel for MinorityInterest Network Corp., an Internet Company in New York City, where he procured trademarks and copyrights, as well as drafted and analyzed many legal contracts. Mr. Bentley then relocated to Chicago to work for one of the most well-known U.S. intellectual property law firms, Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione to specialize in intellectual property, such as preparing and prosecuting patent applications. In 2003, Mr. Bentley opened a law practice in Brooklyn, NY. After managing a successful law practice in Brooklyn, Mr. Bentley became Intellectual Property Counsel for General Electric (GE) Healthcare, Life Sciences. Several years later, he decided to re-open his private practice in NY.
Mr. Bentley has conducted Intellectual Property seminars concerning confidentiality, U.S. Patent Law, Patent searching, and determining inventorship. Most recently, he has presented "Trademarks, Selecting a Business Name & Types of Businesses", "Trademarks Used in the Food Industry", and "The Legal Importance of Trademarks and Copyrights to Small Business and Entrepreneurs."
He is a member of the New York State Bar Association (Intellectual Property Committee and Trust & Estates Diversity Committee) and the Metropolitan Black Bar Association. Mr. Bentley is also a Board Member of the Erasmus Neighborhood Federation, Inc. and an alumnus and mentor at Sponsors for Educational Opportunity.
Mr. Bentley received his Juris Doctor from Syracuse University College of Law. In addition to his law degree, he holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Morgan State University. He is admitted to practice in New York, the U.S. District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office.
